This presentation will review what has been published about telemedicine in the veterinary profession, including direct-to-consumer and teleconsulting between a referring veterinarian and a specialist. Some of the articles come from studies and peer-reviewed journals and others may be opinion pieces. Because veterinary telemedicine is frequently compared to the use of telemedicine in human pediatrics, we will also review lessons learned from that area. The literature looks at uses of telemedicine, as well as judicious use of antimicrobials and triaging cases to make better use of urgent care and emergency room facilities.
